Our Dance School – McGahan Lees Irish Dance Academy

  • We are part of the McGahan Lees Irish Dance Academy, which has its roots in the United Kingdom and successfully operates across Europe and Asia – including Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hong Kong. We offer Irish dance classes for everyone – from complete beginners to advanced dancers.

  • Premium instruction led by qualified teachers – our head instructors are Siobhan Forrest Jacobs T.C.R.G. and Niall Forrest T.C.R.G., but thanks to the academy’s background we also have the opportunity to train with many other dancers and teachers who have achieved success at all major competitions, including title placements at the World Championships.
  • Every class starts with a warmup, strengthening exercises and stretching. After that, we focus on improving the students’ dancing technique. In the second part of each class, we practise solo and group dances of different rhythms and, towards the end of the school year, we work on a choreography for the End-of-the-School-Year Show. Every class ends with cool down stretching.

  • For our classes you will need: comfortable sports clothes, special dancing shoes (we will gladly help you choose the right pair), enough water or an ion supply drink and a small towel.

  • The minimum required age for attending our courses is 5 and there is no upper age limit. Our teachers take into consideration the age and individual needs of each student.

  • Dance courses start in September, but it is possible to join during the school year by arrangement with the instructor.

Our beginner courses are intended for dancers from about 13 years of age who have no previous experience with Irish dancing. Students usually start with one class of soft-shoe dancing a week.

First, they learn basic elements in reel and jig rhythm and simple ceilí dances (group dances in circles, twos, threes, fours etc.) and later, they are taught four basic solo dances of the beginner soft-shoe grade (beginner reel, light jig, slip jig and single jig).

We recommend that students complete at least one semester of soft shoes before starting with hard shoes.

Each course is usually led by two teachers, which makes it possible to accept new students even after classes had already started.

Our beginner courses take place in Nusle and Vršovice in Prague.

Our courses for children are intended for dancers of 5 to about 15 years of age. Beginners usually have soft shoe classes once or twice a week. For children, we recommend two classes a week—they will remember more, improve faster and enjoy dancing more.

Children in our courses first learn basic elements in reel and jig rhythm and simple ceilí dances (group dances in circles, twos, threes, fours etc.) and later, they are taught four basic solo dances of the beginner soft-shoe grade (beginner reel, light jig, slip jig and single jig). Once they have completed two semesters of classes, they can also start with hard shoes.

Advanced students can attend workshops with Siobhán Forrest and the most skilful ones will be invited to join the Rinceoirí Junior group, which performs together with Rinceoirí throughout the year.

Each course is usually led by two teachers, which makes it possible to accept new students even after classes had already started.

Beginner/Primary

In our beginner/primary courses, we focus on perfecting the technique for beginner and primary solo dances in both soft and hard shoes and prepare the students for participation in international competitions. In soft-shoe classes, we also practise team competition dances (2hand, 3hand and 4hand reel), and in hard-shoe classes, we learn the Irish polka. Towards the end of the school year, we create choreographies for the End-of-the-School-Year Show in June. These courses include workshops with Siobhán Forrest TCRG.

Intermediate/Open

Moving to more advanced courses

It is up to the teacher to decide whether a student is ready to proceed to a more advanced course. This is decided at the end of each semester, usually based mainly (but not exclusively) on whether the dancer have advanced to a next grade in competitions. The soft- and hard-shoes teachers do this independently of each other. In other words, a student can be allowed to move up in one, but not in the other.

Wait-listing for membership in Rinceoirí

If an instructor sees potential in a dancer, they may propose them for acceptance as a candidate at a Rinceoirí z.s. members’ meeting. Candidacy means that the dancer attends the most advanced courses of the McGahan Lees Academy as well as Rinceoirí training sessions. Admission as a candidate is discussed and approved at the members’ meeting. The evaluation focuses primarily on technique, overall dance style, active participation in classes, attendance, as well as whether the dancer engages in activities outside of training, takes part in optional practice sessions, and is willing to dedicate their free time to Irish dance. Membership in Rinceoirí z.s. is again decided by the members’ meeting. The conditions are communicated to dancers upon their acceptance as candidates.

Our advanced courses take place in Nusle in Prague.
